•3D imaging, or stereoscopy, is an optical technique where two images of the same object are blended into one, creating a 3D appearance.
•3D imaging captures the 3D structure of scenes and objects within the viewer’s environment. The set of data points computed in 3D space is combined with the colour texture information in the form of registered 2D images, which are obtained from standard digital capture. This 3D data with or with out colour/texture information is referred by different names such as 3D model or 3D scan or 3D image.
•The 3D imaging has applications in various fields such as design, manufacturing, defence, security, entertainment, and medicine.
•Traditionally, two-dimensional (2D) images are suited for many situations; and are best suited for display images and recording. However, they are always subjected to interpretation by the human eyes. It is difficult for a computer to analyze the 2D image. Hence, 3D is needed.
•Imaging in 3D reduces the difficulties in computer vision. The idea behind viewing objects is not to analyze the colours and textures but to segment them in terms of real world objects and spatial and temporal relationships in the scene.
