For some CSPs, support of their transformational efforts will come in the form of managed operations services. Since only a handful of companies are capable of providing these services for Tier 1 CSPs, this report will focus on them: Ericsson, HP, Huawei, Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent. The report will also present the drivers affecting the managed operations services market for telecom, as well as some of the successes and approaches of the major solution suppliers in this space.
Relying on Managed Services for operating, maintaining, and monetizing certain aspects of their world-class networks is not something communications services providers (CSPs) tend to talk about, particularly Tier 1 CSPs. Yet, they rely on them nevertheless. It is not important that CSPs bring their little secret out into the open, but if they are reluctant to do so because of perceived negative connotations, then secrecy is becoming unnecessary. With the accelerating adoption of public cloud services, it will soon become either impossible to tell who controls the end-to-end network infrastructure, or the ownership of control simply becomes of no concern for the end user. Likewise, to the few select vendors that have the capacity to deliver managed services at the Tier 1 scale, there is little concern of CSPs ceasing their reliance on managed services. The opportunities in managed services grow more enticing every day for both the CSPs needing such services and with the suppliers that deliver them, particularly in managed CSP operations services. Managed CSP operations services include network planning, network deployment, ongoing network management, and
performance management. Piqued CSP interest stems in part from strategic planning tied to the transformational changes on the horizon. These changes are now driven
by a number of emerging technologies and new business models including:
• Network Function Virtualization (NFV)
• Software-Defined Networking (SDN)
• Open source development and its communities
• Cloud services adoption
• The Internet of Things (IoT)
• Small-cell technologies
• The business models of new competitors
• Network sharing
