The growth of the feed prebiotic industry is directly correlated to growing demand for feed and feed additives, to meet the animal nutritional requirements. The global feed prebiotics market revenue is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 12.9% from 2015 to 2020.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon. Prebiotics primarily prevent disease among the livestock. Prebiotics have also been shown to stimulate the immune system of host animals improving animal health. The main advantage of prebiotics is that they can be added to animal feed without losing efficacy during the heat treatment of feed processing. Prebiotics are the fastest growing segment in the additives market with a CAGR of 12.9%.

Feed prebiotics market is slowly rising due to the rise in growth of feed additives industry and expansion of animal meat sector. Along with them, the rise in concern for animal nutrition has also driven the feed prebiotics market. Though the market is barricaded by regulatory intervention, the ban on antibiotics has spurred the market to grow during the forecast period. Increasing demand in Asia-pacific and Latin American markets has also created a scope for the growth of market. The growing trend is observed among all the segments of the livestock with poultry being just ahead for ruminant and swine in market share. The market is estimated to cross half a billion dollars in terms of market revenue by 2020.

Recent outbreaks of food-borne diseases highlight the need for reducing bacterial pathogens in foods of animal origin. In addition, the risk of developing cross-resistance and multiple antibiotic resistances in pathogenic bacteria in both humans and livestock, the subsequent limitation and ban on antibiotics have fuelled the market for prebiotics. Key companies have been looking for alternative methods to prevent pathogen colonization since the ban on AGPs.

The Asia-Pacific market is also expected to have a high CAGR of 13.5% due to increasing demand for meat products in the region and rising domestic meat production, especially in China, India, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore. In North America, United States is the largest market with a revenue share of 65%.

The leading companies focused on expansion of the business across regions. The companies are also increasing production capacities of their existing plants. Cargill, beghin Meiji, FrieslandCampina Domo, Cosucra-Groupe Warcoing SA are the most active companies accounting for more than 60% of the global market share. The smaller share companies incorporate a major share in total market. Other major participants in the market are Beneo-Orafti SA and Abbott, which also have a significant place in the feed prebiotic market.
