BMI View:
We continue to believe that a combination of a slowing agricultural sector and a weakening New Zealand dollar will lead to a slight slowdown in New Zealand's new vehicle sales market in 2016. We are targeting 3.5% sales growth for the sector as a whole in 2016, down slightly from our forecast of 3.8% growth last quarter.

- This quarter, BMI has extended its forecast period to 2020.
- Over this period, we expect 24% sales growth from the New Zealand new vehicle sales market, with passenger cars (PCs) to outperform commercial vehicles (CVs).
- During 2015, New Zealand new vehicle sales rose by 4.7% year-on-year (y-o-y), to 141,659 units.
- For 2016, we are anticipating a slowdown in this growth rate, to around the 3.5% mark, as households deal with high debt levels, undermining PC sales, and as demand for CVs from the key Agriculture and Construction sectors remains weak.
- Toyota remained the leading brand in New Zealand, for the 28th consecutive year in 2015, selling a total of 26,330 vehicles across all segments for a leading market share of 20%.
