The Manufacture of Cement, Lime and Plaster: This report focuses on the manufacture of cement and other cementitious products both domestically and regionally. Total sub-Saharan demand for cement totalled an estimated 80 million tons during 2014 with South African sales of cementitious products reaching 13.1 million tons. Statistics South Africa reported that the value of domestic sales of non-metallic mineral products, which includes cement, stood at R23bn for the first six months of 2015.

A sector Under Pressure: The domestic cement market is currently characterised by fierce competition and resultant depressed profit margins, with market leader PPC reporting that profit for the first six months of 2015 was down 38% year-on-year. The huge levels of competition have been brought on largely by industry over-supply, partly as a result of cement imports from Pakistan. The amount of Pakistani cement being traded locally has prompted accusations of dumping being brought before the International Trade Administration Commission (Itac). The high levels of competition have been exacerbated by the entrance of new players into the South African market, including Mamba, recently established by the Jidong Development Group, one of China’s largest building materials firms, and Sephaku Cement, a subsidiary of Dangote Cement, Nigeria’s largest cement manufacturer. As a result, a number of local firms are aggressively expanding their regional operations in an effort to compete with other African and multinational players who are also focusing on the market in the rest of Africa.

Report Coverage:

The report on the domestic and regional cement sector describes the current market, outlines developments within the sector and focuses on factors influencing the success of industry. The report also profiles 11 key players in the local market and details the continental footprint of six major cement manufacturers, including multinational Lafarge Africa Plc and Germany-based Heidelberg Cement.
