Manufacture and Wholesale of Pumps, Compressors, Taps and Valves: The South African pump and valve manufacturing industry manufactures a diverse range of products ranging from the small items used in the pharmaceutical industry to the massive slurry pumps, dewatering pumps and valves used in the mining industry. According to the Valve and Actuator Manufacturers Cluster of South Africa (VAMCOSA) the valve sector is worth approximately R4.5bn annually and its 18 members account for 90% of the valves and actuators manufactured locally. The38 members of the Southern African Pump Systems Development Association (SAPSDA) estimate the value of the pumps sector at R1bn per annum.
Slow Trading Conditions: Like most manufacturing industries, the South African pumps, compressors, taps and valves industry, has been negatively impacted by the weak economy, volatile exchange rates, rising input costs and political uncertainty. Manufacturers rely largely on State-Owned Enterprises for business, with the water and power generation industries accounting for 43% of the total valve market, so delays in state infrastructure spend mean that the sector experienced lower than expected growth in 2015.
Reliance on the Foundry Sector: Local foundries play a large part in enabling the pumps and valve industry to reach competitive targets, as castings comprise the bulk of the cost and material of pumps and valves. However, at least 100 foundries have closed since 2003, including Steloy Castings which went into liquidation in July 2016, and total production has slowed by 43% since 2007. The industry will have to look at importing the necessary input materials which is likely to increase costs and further reduce competitiveness.
Report Coverage: This report examines the major activities of the sector, the size and state of the industry and outlines the initiatives implemented by government in an attempt to revive the manufacturing sector. The report profiles 20 companies, including the three largest pump manufacturers, Weir Minerals, KSB and Sulzer Pumps SA. Also profiled is AVK Holding Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd, a Danish valve company that acquired a majority stake in South Africa’s Premier Valves Group (PVG) in 2014.
