BMI View: We hold a broadly positive outlook for Namibia's tourism market. Although in the early stagesof development, with low visitor figures compared to South Africa, the most established regionaldestination, Namibia is gradually raising awareness of its attractions and improving supporting transportinfrastructure in order to sustain long-term tourism growth. The country is successfully attracting visitorsfrom affluent European markets and is also developing a closer relationship with China, which couldpotentially give access to a large potential market. Growth of the tourism industry is heavily dependentupon the health and security of Namibia's national parks and wildlife reserves, and protecting theseresources will be vital to ensuring the future of the tourism industry.

Key Updates And Forecasts

- Namibia continues to invest in vital transport infrastructure which will support the development of thetourism industry. As well as expansion works to Hosea Kutako International Airport, Namibia has alsocommitted to upgrading 1,480km of roads over the next five years which will improve accessibilityacross the country.

- Although a small market, we are forecasting steady growth in international arrivals to Namibia over theforecast period, between 2016 and 2020, with total arrivals expected to reach over 1.6mn in 2020, upfrom 1.3mn in 2016.

- With Namibia keen to promote itself as a safari holiday destination, the country will need to do more totackle illegal wildlife poaching. A record number of rhinos were killed in 2015 according to the Ministryof Environment and Tourism and the government is reportedly considering raising the reward toencourage more informants to come forward.
