  5. > Automation and Control Market in Malaysia : Anticipated Oil & Gas and Petrochemicals Projects Across Malaysia to Offer Key Opportunities for Automation Vendors

Key Findings

The total automation and control market in Malaysia is at the growth stage. The market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of x % from 2014 to 2019.
Market growth will be tied to the performance of oil & gas as well as chemicals & petrochemicals industries. Opportunities will arise from the need for a higher degree of control, sharing of resources, and better capacity utilization.
Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) will be among the most sought after automation systems along with distributed control systems (DCSs), as there are applications involving factory automation. Factory automation will be supported by demand from the electronics & semiconductor industry as well as the machinery/equipment manufacturing industry, whereas the oil & gas and chemicals & petrochemicals industries will offer opportunities for process automation.
Major regions of activity for automation vendors will be in Sarawak, Sabah, and Southern Johor. Multinational oil & gas companies and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies are active across the region, as several projects are slated to commence production by 2020.
The automation market is characterized by stiff competition and most of the major automation vendors are present in Malaysia. Most suppliers operate through system integrators (with the exception of safety systems and DCS manufacturers), a model that has found acceptance among both end-users and vendors.

CEO’s Perspective

While oil & gas and petrochemicals will be indispensable for automation vendors’ revenue, the automation industry will also witness opportunities in the pharmaceuticals and healthcare industry over the next five years.
The Main Automation Controller (MAC) concept is gaining popularity in the way projects are executed because end-users are looking to save on costs and hand over responsibility of maintenance to ‘one-stop shop’ solutions providers.
Success for market leaders is attributable to a broad portfolio, channel partnerships, and frequent additions to the product line. Automation vendors looking to strengthen partnerships regionally will find opportunities.
Infrastructure development is a top priority for the government, as it looks to establish Malaysia’s standing in Southeast Asia (SEA). There will be significant support for the automation industry from state-run and public enterprises, as the government is keen to attract foreign investment.

Introduction to Malaysia

Economy: As of 2014, Malaysia has been relatively insulated from the economic downturn experienced by SEA countries. Its economic growth was much better than that of the Philippines (at x %), Indonesia (at x %), Singapore (at x %), and Thailand [at ( x %)]. The increase in gas production compensated for the negative growth in the mining sector, which stood at ( x %).

Trade: Malaysia recorded a trade surplus of $ x million in September 2014, up from $ x million in August 2014. Over the years, Malaysia’s foreign policy has become increasingly westward looking. International trade plays a vital role in Malaysia’s economy. Its main exports are electrical and electronics products (which account for x % of the total exports), palm oil ( x % of the total exports), petroleum products ( x % of the total exports), and liquefied natural gas (LNG) ( x % of the total exports).
