BMI View: Italy has a very large and well-established tourism sector. The country is a popular destinationfor travellers from within Europe and across the world, drawn to its rich culture and exciting history. Overthe forecast period we see total arrivals to the country growing significantly, especially with a weaker euro,as economic conditions continue to improve in many of the key source markets. Many Asian and Middle-Eastern countries appear keen to develop improved travel links with Italy in the coming years, Qatar inparticular looking to Italy as a key destination. Although the tourism sector is large, it is currently saturatedand opportunities for new entrants may be limited. The high-end, luxury accommodation market isespecially well catered for in Italy, especially in the major cities. Opportunities may be offered by theemerging concept of "green tourism"; accommodation and establishments that offer visitors an eco-friendlyenvironment and operate in an environmentally focussed way. The growing popularity of such travel haslead to a planned Green Tourism Seminar in the country in 2016.

Key Updates And Forecasts

- In December 2015, the first Italian official website aimed only at Russian tourists was opened. Thewebsite provides information on all cities and regions in the country, as well as accommodationavailability. Russia is currently a major source market for Italy and it is hoped that this website willfacilitate the arrival of even more tourists from the country.

- In January 2016, the Italian government announced that EUR300mn will be made available for theprotection of cultural heritage throughout the country. This resource comes after recognition by thegovernment of the importance that history and culture hold in the plan to boost tourism revenue.
