The Middle East & Africa (MEA) IR detector market is estimated to achieve revenues of $20.9 million by 2019. The segment in Africa held the largest market share of 60.9% in 2014, whereas the Middle East segment had a market share of 39.1% in the same year. The growth of the IR detector market in the MEA region is driven by various factors, including rapidly decreasing costs of IR detectors. It is expected that the cost of IR detectors will drastically reduce during the forecast period of 2014-2019, mainly due to product developments and application of product technologies such as MCT and InGaAs in wider spectral ranges, beyond 8µm. This rapid reduction in costs is expected to expand the use of IR detectors in many application segments such as spectroscopy, bio medical imaging, and automotive.

In this report, the Middle East & Africa IR detector market has been broadly classified into five main technologies, namely MCT, InGaAs, pyroelectric, thermopile, and microbolometer. MCT or mercury cadmium telluride is majorly manufactured by cooled technology due to the limitation on its performance, which operates under a specified temperature range. Large uniform and defect-free MCT wafers are needed for production of low-cost, large area IR FPAs (Focal Plane Arrays).

The MCT market segment is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 7.8% from 2014 to 2019. Its revenue amounted to $1.0 million in 2014 and is expected to grow to $1.4 million by 2019. The demand for MCT technology is expected to be driven by military applications (such as night vision cameras and lasers) and other major applications such as temperature measurement and gas & fire detection. People and motion detection technology has not been considered as it does not use the MCT technology for IR detection.

In recent times, owing to factors such as price erosion and product developments, MCT & InGaAs technologies are finding mention in newer application areas & low priced products such as bio-medical imaging and heat & gas detection.

The Middle East & Africa IR detector market is a competitive market with a number of market players with niche technologies. In 2014, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. had a market share of 12%. In November 2014, Murata launched the world’s first wall surface mount ultrasonic sensor device. Its products were produced by its subsidy, Hakui Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. These sensors are ideal for distance measurement and position detectors.
