The aromatics, mainly benzene, toluene and the xylene are produced as co-products in refinery catalytic reformers, olefins plants and by the coal tar process as well as toluene disproportionation and transalkylaton units.

The aromatics are the basic building blocks for a wide array of important industrial uses such as production of styrene, polycarbonate as well as solvents and polyesters. The most commercially significant aromatics are benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX).

Despite the high value chemical uses, much of the aromatics stream such as toluene and the xylene are blended into gasoline as octane enhancers.

The aromatics market has been volatile in both price and demand over the past few years. The volatility is mainly due to the aromatics being considered as by products. Benzene sourced from pyrolyis gas (pygas) is influenced by ethylene production economics. With respect to refinery reformate the demand for transport fuels is affected by high crude oil and refined product prices.

This report provides intelligence and analysis on the aromatics supply sources, demand drivers and trade.
