Despite market liberalisation Slovakia's incumbent telco Slovak Telekom maintains a near monopoly of the fixed-line market. The company also dominates the DSL broadband sector, though this can partly be attributed to a pricing strategy which effectively prevented competitors from making a profit through local loop unbundling, a practice for which it was fined by the European Union in 2014. Market competition has forced a number of mergers and acquisitions in recent years, resulting in a small number of larger alternative operators. Following numerous delays, the government in May 2015 acted on its plans to sell its 49% stake in Slovak Telekom. It cancelled a planned IPO, instead electing to sell its share to Deutsche Telekom.

This report outlines Slovakia's fixed-line telecoms market, providing an overview of the regulatory environment, profiles of the major operators, and a range of operational and financial statistics.

Key developments:
Government sells 49% stake in Slovak Telekom to Deutsche Telekom; GTS Nextra rebranded as BENESTRA; Slovakia connects to fibre DREAM cable; Slovak Telecom and T-Mobile Slovensko merge; new Regulatory Office for Electronic Communications and Postal Services created; regulator transposes new NRF into law; Slovak Telekom contracts Ericsson to manage its fixed line network; regulator's market data to June 2014; telcos' operating data to Q4 2014; recent market developments.

Companies covered in this report include:
Slovak Telecom, O2 Slovakia, BENESTRA (GTS Nextra).
