These plastics, derived from plant matter, refer to two types of materials: firstly the agro-plastics from renewable resources, starch extracts from cereals (wheat, maize), glucose, vegetable oil (sugar cane, castor oil) and potatoes; and secondly the biodegradable plastics obtained by incorporating various compounds in a resin, often the result of petrochemical reactions.
Bio-plastics present solutions to waste management thanks to their biodegradable characteristics (compostable). They also present economic advantages (fewer steps in the industrial recycling processes), and help to limit the use of fossil fuels. Experts are now talking about the second generation of bio-plastics and are working on creating bio-plastics from non-food resources.
