For 2004 through 2014, total freight is segmented by mode as follows: trucking, pipeline, railroad, water, and air.

To illustrate historical trends, total volume, total revenues, and the various volume segments are provided in annual series from 2004 to 2014. A Market Environment section provides pertinent background on historical industry size and trends, key economic indicators, NAFTA trade, environmental and regulatory factors, waterborne freight by commodity, competing transport modes, and total freight shipments by mode. A Segmentation and Forecasts section defines waterborne freight, discusses market drivers and constraints, identifies substitute services when applicable, and assesses the impact of key drivers and constraints on each waterborne freight segment over the forecast period.

Further analysis includes an Industry Structure section, which surveys the US waterborne freight industry and profiles the leading domestic firms competing to serve US demand.
