Although Australia's broadband sector is migrating to a multi-technology NBN with greater emphasis on fibre access, the DSL sector continues to show resilience as operators adopt new technologies such as VDSL and G.fast which can deliver greater data capacity on legacy copper infrastructure. Telstra's unbundled local loop service provides smaller operators with a platform o offer broadband services, In addition, the pace of the NBN roll out, slower than that envisaged a few years ago, has helped retain the relevance of DSL infrastructure for a large proportion of broadband subscribers. Consolidation within the market in recent months, with moves including the bid for iiNet from M2, will provide greater reach and scale among operators and further cement the place for DSL infrastructure in the marketplace while the migration to FttP continues in core high-density areas.

This report provides an overview of the DSL market, incorporating data from a range of sources including Australian Communications and Media Authority's 2013/14 report, material from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to December 2014, operator data into 2015, data from the government's December 2013 Broadband Availability and Quality Report, as well as recent market developments.
