BMI View: The maturity of the Norwegian power market, coupled with surplus power generation, meansoverall generation growth will remain limited. Hydropower will remain the dominant source of power atover 94% of total generation, with ambitions to increase export capacity, driving the growth of nonhydropowerrenewable electricity up until 2020.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- Helgeland Kraft AS received a USD56.4mn loan from the Nordic Investment Bank to finance theconstruction of six small-scale hydropower projects in the Helgeland region. Total generation from theplants will amount to 133GWh, which are estimated to come online between mid-2016 to end-2017.

- We increased our forecasts for non-hydropower renewable generation significantly, due to improvedcost eficiency acting as a new driver for the development of the 1,000 megawatt (MW) Fosen-Snillfjordonshore wind farm. Statkraft will collaborate with TrønderEnergi and Nordic Wind Power for theconstruction of the wind farm. We forecast non-hydropower renewable generation will grow at an annualaverage of 9.7%, increasing from just over 3 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2016 to 6.5TWh in 2025.

- The Norwegian government is seeking to leave the joint renewable energy subsidy scheme it has withSweden in a bid to improve market conditions for local producers in the face of falling electricity prices.Instead, the Norwegian government will focus on improving export capabilities. The government willcontinue to support renewable electricity producers already present up until 2035.

- According to Statnett, the UK-Norway grid interconnection project has entered the construction phase.Once complete, this project will enable up to 1,4GW worth of electricity trade, supplying enoughelectricity for up to 750,000 households. The link will reportedly be finished in 2021.
