Consolidation of Partnerships and Growth of Video-as-a-Service Increase Adoption of Video Conferencing Solutions
A rise in employee mobility, increased interaction and content sharing within the enterprise landscape, more collaboration services from outside the service provider ecosystem, and the consumerization of IT are making customers more demanding about services and how they are consumed. Market consolidation has also resulted in a better distribution structure and improved technical competency. Several vendors have formed strategic partnerships to offer interoperable solutions, which is resulting in the higher adoption of video conferencing solutions.
- Board Room Systems facilitate VC in a group setting. These are high-quality systems designed to be used in shared environments, such as meeting rooms, board rooms, and auditoriums. Typically, they are sold as box shipments of individual codec bundles. Usually, each codec bundle includes codec, camera, and or sets of microphones. Other items needed to complete installation, such as video displays and a service contract, are charged separately. Typically, these systems are priced higher than executive desktop hardware systems as they offer better features, such as in-built-multi-point capability and audio and video that are designed to be used in a meeting room environment. Each codec bundle is counted as unit sold. Examples include the Polycom HDX - Series and the Cisco Profile Series.
- Executive/Desktop Solutions include executive office systems that are all-in-one units with a built-in camera and a flat panel monitor and can also function as a PC display. These units are designed for personal conferencing for - persons. In several instances, executive VC systems are also deployed in a conference room setting for small-group VC. Examples include the Cisco EX and 1700MXP Series and the Polycom HDX 4000.
- Personal Desktop Software is not included in this research service. With cameras and microphones designed for personal or single-person use, this product segment includes PC-based solutions optimized for the desktop environment. These units offer the ability to launch a multi-point call, typically up to or sites, without the need for an external bridge or bridging service provider.
- An MCU, also known as a conferencing bridge, allows or more terminals to connect and participate in a multi-point conference. It includes a multi-point controller and a multi-point processor. The former collects information about the capabilities of the individual terminals and sets up the conference. The latter manages the audio, video, and data streams between the individual terminals. A bridge can be either a stand-alone bridge or a bridge built into the endpoint.
- Gateways provide interoperability between terminals residing on disparate networks, primarily Internet Protocol (IP) and Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) for VC applications. Gateways are essential for multi-protocol and multi-network environments. They aid in protocol translation, information transfer, and the conversion of media formats.
- Gatekeepers are an integral part of an IP network. They register each of the VC terminals and provide bandwidth control and optimization in addition to address translation, zone management, and call management. Sometimes, a gatekeeper can be part of an MCU or a gateway.
- Management Tools include software that offers network management and monitoring, end-point or device management, scheduling, directory services, and calendaring tools.
