BMI View: The slump in investment earnings presents a short-term challenge to the life segment. Thanks todemographics and rising healthcare costs, health and personal accident insurance should be the subsectorsthat drive growth in the non-life segment.Latest Updates And Forecasts

- Israel's insurance sector has a number of features in common with its counterpart in South Africa. Thecountry's unusual history means that both segments are dominated by a small number of very substantialand sophisticated indigenous composite groups. Life insurance is substantially larger than non-lifeinsurance, and plays an important role as a conduit for organised savings.

- In spite of the long-term strengths of the life insurers, the latest results from the major companies (inrelation to Q116) indicate that growth in premiums has been slowing. The insurers' earnings havesuffered as a result of volatile financial markets, near zero interest rates and regulatory changes.

- The ageing of the population - and rising medical costs - should boost demand for health and personalaccident insurance, which are important sub-sectors of the non life segment. However, the segment as awhole faces a number of headwinds. These include the sedate pace of economic growth and downwardspressure on prices in the property and motor vehicle insurance sub-sectors.
