DAS technology involves the use of optoelectronic devices to detect acoustic energy by employing an optical fiber which functions as a sensing element. The technology has the capability to detect the change, pinpoint the location of the disturbance, and identify its nature. This enables the detection of the cause of the disturbance even if the event causing the disturbance is not in direct contact with the fiber optic cable. This technology is being used for a number of applications across verticals such as military, infrastructure, oil & gas, and transportation.
DAS technology has been successfully implemented for the pipeline integrity management application in the oil & gas vertical. Oil & gas companies are always on the lookout for technologies that can improve the safety of their pipelines. The early detection of leaks can save losses worth millions of dollars and also prevent environmental damage that would further invite litigations.
