Definitions

Detectors provide a means to identify a developing fire. They are installed as part of a building, and these systems can sense combustion or any unwanted presence of fire. Detectors and alarms are the 2 main categories of detection equipment. Products are chosen based on usage and building type. Detectors are mainly designed to identify products of combustion, such as smoke, heat, and flame. The 3 main types of detectors are as follows:
-Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors function to detect smoke in a particular room and to warn of fire by triggering an alarm. These detectors are of 2 types - optical (photoelectric) and physical (ionization). Ionization detectors are no longer in significant use due to environmental reasons and are being replaced by optical detectors, in most cases. Optical detectors work on the light scatter principle to identify smoke particles in the sensing chamber.
-Heat Detectors: Heat detectors warn of fire when the temperature in the area around the smoke detector reaches a certain level. These detectors are of 2 types - conventional and addressable heat detectors. They are also categorized as fixed and rate-of-rise detectors. Rate-of-rise detectors react to a rapid change, or a rise, in ambient temperature from a normal baseline condition.
-Flame Detectors: Flame detectors sense the amount of ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiant energy given off during a fire. Often, they are considered to have the fastest response time in terms of detecting a fire due to their fast detection capabilities.

Fire alarms are of 3 types, as follows:
-Conventional Panels: Conventional systems have a few circuits, with each circuit covering a zone within a building. The protected area is divided into separate zones; so, if a fire occurs, only the affected zone area is displayed on the main panel.
-Addressable Panels: In addressable systems, the devices are connected in loops, with each device having its own unique address. The addressable system panel can identify the state of each device in the loop. The exact location of the detector will be displayed on the panel in the event of a fire. Further, these panels offer other benefits, such as easier integration with other building safety systems
-Notification Devices: These are output devices used to alert the occupants of a building in case of an emergency fire situation. Notification devices include horns, strobes, and speakers and are defined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as system components providing audible or visual output, or any combination thereof. Generally, these devices are combined, such as horns and strobes, to meet the needs of persons with hearing or sight disabilities.

Despite market maturity, the industry continues to introduce new product offerings that have contributed to product turnover and attracted new demand.
-The demand for clean agents is expected to increase during the forecast period. These agents are considered as premium products; however, water-based products, such as water mist technologies, could capture market share from gas suppression systems.
-Technological and product trends also influence the demand for fire systems. Trends in nozzle designs, water droplet sizes, high pressure systems ( x psi when compared to x psi), and multi-element detection systems hold the potential to positively impact the growth of the fire and safety market.
-Underwriters Laboratories (UL)-approved high-pressure inert systems with x bar will also gain market share during the forecast period.
-Mass notifications, low frequency sounders, aspirating smoke detectors, and voice evacuation are demonstrating increased demand and are expected to trend positively during the forecast period.
-The penetration of Internet protocol (IP) technology in the fire and safety market is on the rise. This is due to the ease of implementation and the convenience of installation as most new buildings already have IP networks.
-Aspirating smoke alarm detectors and addressable control panels will continue to generate demand due to higher performance capabilities.
-Integrated solutions are also acting as excellent specialized solutions to end users. Fire systems can be integrated with other systems in the building, such as the security system and the building management and control system and can even share the same output devices, such as sounders and lighting controls.
