The Internet of Things (IoT) is often proclaimed as the next revolution of the digital world, though some state that the revolution is already here. The European Commission has published a list of initiatives, institutions, groups, and clusters that are already working on the future of the IoT in its “Digital Agenda for Europe—A Europe 2020 Initiative” Web site. This initiative has been established to create common set of rules, policies, and standards to ensure a trustworthy environment.

A trustworthy ecosystem will be key for IoT to gain market traction. IoT creates new usages, new systems, and new ways to manage and store data and as a result, security threats and data breaches are critical in such networks. Machines are autonomous and can decide to collect information in a real-time environment. Such rapid evolution has generated a new threat regarding privacy. Data security and data protection are two market areas that could be targeted for expansion by digital identification stakeholders, improving their historical security knowledge and market positioning. This would allow them to be seen as recognized partners.

Digital identification market participants have already invested in platforms that could handle identification and security profiles. In addition, these platforms can also help service providers (SP) better manage their application and associated services. Globally, citizens are very concerned with security and privacy issues because some IoT applications are linked to sensitive infrastructure, such as utilities. Others are collecting personal information such as health data. As smart objects will have autonomy, the IoT security and privacy solutions will have to create a similar approach to better detect, react to, and remove possible attacks.

The Internet and other communication devices such as cellular phones already connect humans, but a new revolution is coming from the explosion of wearable devices that can be connected in real time to a global network (IoE). Wearable devices will not be the only connected items, as cars, smart meters, and healthcare devices are also becoming increasingly connected.
