Wind Likely to Surpass 2014 Installation Record

Summary

The global wind market is likely to surpass 2014 installation record. China led new wind installations in H1 2015 with a total installed capacity of 10.1 Gigawatts (GW), followed by Germany (2.3 GW), the US (2.0 GW), India (1.3 GW), Brazil (1.2 GW), and Canada (510 Megawatts (MW)). Global new publicly announced wind turbine order intake in Q2 2015 increased by 19.4% over Q1 2015, and 40.6% over Q4 2014. The UK overtook the US as the largest market for publicly announced wind turbine orders in H1 2015, followed by the US and India. Major wind turbine manufacturers such as Vestas, Nordex, and Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica saw an increase in their order backlogs in Q2 2015 compared with Q1 2015, due to higher order intake activity. Most OEMs witnessed an increase in service revenue in 2014 over 2013, as turbine maintenance continued to provide steady revenue. Companies such as Gamesa and Vestas had a good start in Q1 2015 in terms of O&M revenues. Revenue opportunities are motivating technological innovations and service improvement to meet the dynamic needs of the wind industry O&M business. Germany is expected to dominate by accounting for more than 47% of the average installations during the 2015–2016 period, while China is expected to occupy the second position. Average wind turbine prices have stabilized since 2014, with a marginal increase, reaching $1.10m per MW. Pricing pressures have eased due to policy stability, steady demand, and the expansion of Chinese suppliers in the Asian market.
