Austria's domestic power sector is highly developed, with near universal access to the grid and a well-established renewable energy sector. Limited growth in consumption and a lack of public investment capacity means there is little demand for new power plants and outside of the non-hydropower renewables sector we do not expect to see any rapid gains in total generation and capacity. Coal will remain the sector underperformer, as aging coal-fired power plants are decommissioned, leading to a contraction in thermal power's contribution to the domestic energy mix. Austria is increasingly reliant on energy imports, primarily from Czech Republic and Germany, which provide low-cost stable energy to balance out fluctuating renewables output.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- The biggest change potentially facing Austria's power sector is Germany's split of the shared electricity market. While the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) is reportedly backing the move, Austria, via E-Control, is challenging the decision through the European Courts. A verdict is not expected until the end of the year.

- Two of the largest energy producers in the country, Verbund and OMV are reportedly considering collaborating on various power sector projects. The partnership would cover areas such as power supply, energy services, hydropower generation and the hydrogen sector.
