BMI View: It is estimated that formal retail now accounts for 30% of the total Kenyan retail sector,contributing KES440bn to the country's GDP and employing nearly 200,000 staff. This contribution isexpected to rise significantly as formal shopping floor space is set to double in coming years. However,overall household income levels in Kenya remain very low, supporting demand for the most essential goodsand services.Key Views And Developments

- Political instability will weigh on growth in Kenya over the coming quarters, causing real GDP growth todip below 6.0% in 2017 as levels of tourism and inward investment see mild decline. However, a morestable shilling and low inflation will boost production incentives amongst businesses as input costs arecontrolled in a climate of robust demand.

- Spending on essential goods and services will continue to dominate household budgets in Kenya. Thelargest spending category will remain food and non-alcoholic drinks, accounting for just over a thirdof total spending by 2020.
