BMI View:

The UAE will remain a hub for solar power investment in the GCC over the next decade, as the technology continues to improve its competitiveness relative to natural gas, and the government remains firmly supportive of power mix diversification efforts. The vast potential of distributed solar capacity will lead to the wealthiest emirates - Abu Dhabi and Dubai - to boost capacity uptake in order to support smarter power consumption and generation.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- The strengthening project pipeline for non-hydro renewables projects in the UAE - particularly solar facilities - supports our growth forecasts. Our Key Projects Database highlights that there is over 1.5GW of renewables capacity in the project pipeline - across various stages of development, mostly in the tendering phase. A total of 1.4GW of this capacity is solar, aligning with our view that 99% of non-hydro renewables capacity will be made up from solar power in 2025. We forecast solar capacity to expand by an annual average of 33.4% between 2016 and 2025, meaning the sector will comprise nearly 1.9GW by the end of our 10-year forecast.
