According to a recent Cisco survey, global mobile data traffic increased by % in 2014 to reach an average of exabytes per month. By 2019, monthly traffic is set to grow almost ten-fold to reach exabytes. This explosion of data will have to be managed by the service providers for private data, and by cities or governments for public information.
Indeed, the revolution of smart cities and smart services has created new data sets that are collected on a daily basis. Governments have started to propose administrative services to citizens to facilitate interaction and reduce management costs. However, deploying such services places new requirements such as protection of the data privacy. Furthermore, the massive growth of connected devices will generate private information that the industry will be able to use.
For example, Cisco’s analysis has estimated that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) (2014–2019) will reach %, with regard to the data traffic generated only by wearable devices. Individuals are not entirely aware of the kind of data being collected or the ways in which they can protect their privacy.
Globally, there are no common regulations; privacy perceptions vary according to locations. Additionally, there is no single, undisputed technology that can entirely protect privacy; there are only initiatives and algorithms that are not fully finalized. Though best practices, such as compartmentalization and encryption, can be used to protect data and decrease vulnerability, the demand is strong, and individuals will soon ask private companies or the public sector to better manage the activities, and citizen privacy protection in particular.
