BMI View:

The Danish construction sector will no longer be a regional outperformer, due to a weak economic picture in H216 and 2017. However, investment in the infrastructure sector will drive a solid project pipeline until 2021. Areas that will particularly benefit from government, EU and institutional investor backing will be the rail sector and renewable energy expansion. In the long term, growth will moderate significantly as key projects finalise. A bright spot in 2016 and 2017 is residential building, which is the only buildings segment growing positively.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- After constrained growth of 2.1% in 2016, Denmark's construction industry will return to 3.2% annually between 2017 and 2020. Economic headwinds will constrain exports, GDP growth and fixed investment in H216 and 2017. Residential construction will be the only buildings segment to see positive growth.

- Investment appetite for renewables, rail, energy transmission and select real estate projects will remain diligent in the face a volatile economic environment, as evidenced by pension funds posting strong returns and Dong Energy's oversubscribed IPO in June.

- The government is set to invest DKK27.5bn in an infrastructure plan to improve public transport and we expect Danish pension funds to increase their exposure and commitments to project financing.

- The Transport Ministry has promised to spend over DKK100bn upgrading and expanding the country's rail network by 2030.
