BMI View: Growth in the Dutch power sector will come mainly from non-hydropower renewableinvestments over our 10-year forecast period as plans to expand offshore wind capacity goes ahead.Conventional power investment will remain muted as the government tries to reduce carbon emissions fromthermal power and the economic viability of nuclear power decreases.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- A report commissioned by the Minister of Economic Affairs has found that the closure of all the coalpowerplants in the Netherlands by 2020 could cost up to EUR7bn. The report further states that theclosing of Dutch coal-fired power plants will not affect energy security, although electricity prices wouldincrease as demand and trade increases.

- The report has been commissioned by the Minister in order to help with the decision on whether or not toclose the remaining coal-fired power plants. The decision reportedly has to be made by the end of 2016,and we will adjust our forecasts for coal-fired power accordingly if necessary.

- We are maintaining our forecasts for nuclear power since last quarter. We expect that the weak economicenvironment for nuclear power will mean that the majority of Dutch investment will be focused on nonhydropowerrenewables, particularly the 3.5 gigawatt (GW) offshore wind project.

- Danish firm DONG Energy has won the tender for the 700 megawatts (MW) Borssele I and II offshorewind at the Borssele Alpha site. This is the first tender to be awarded for the five rounds of 3.5 gigawatt(GW) of total offshore wind power planned between 2019 to 2023.
