Passengers volumes have decreased by 2.1% since 2000, registering 102 million passengers travelling through major UK airports. During 2001, the airlines were hit by a combination of the economic slowdown, the sharp fall in business travel, the downturn in air traffic after the attack on the world trade center and the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the UK. Heathrow and Gatwick airports have continued to be the worst affected by the impact of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
