BMI View:
Mongolia's construction industry went significantly off trend in 2014-2015 due to the slowdown in Russia and China, and falling commodities prices. However, while economic headwinds will remain severe and public spending significantly constrained, a newly elected pro-investment parliament will boost momentum to development and investment in mining and transport infrastructure.
Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- After two years of recession, we forecast sector growth adjusting to 6.4% in 2016 and averaging 6.4% annually to 2025.

- The pro-investment Mongolian People's Party won a landslide parliament election in June, paving the way for more investment into the mining industry by seeking to resume the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine and increase momentum in phase two of Rio Tinto's Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine, which is now underway.

- We expect more miners to undertake exploration projects in Mongolia over the coming quarters. Changes to the country's mining code have made the mining sector more receptive to investment.

- As investment returns to the minerals extraction industry, expansion and improvement of transport and trading infrastructure will be required.
