The finance industry can be understood as a combination of financial institutions and financial services. Monetary authorities, security exchanges, commercial banks and industrial banks fall into the financial institutions category. Economic services provided by the finance industry such as investment activities, credit intermediation and insurance brokerages can be classified under financial services. Financial services are businesses that manage money. Banking, accounting, insurance, brokerage, and investment are popular financial services offered.

The total value of the finance sector globally in 2015 was $XX billion. Related to a world population of more than XX billion in 2015 this equates to about $XX per person per annum. Given that World Domestic Product was approximately $XX trillion in 2015, the market makes up about XX% of the global economy. The finance industry provides employment to large numbers of workers globally. In the UK, in 2014, the finance industry employed approximately XX million workers. In the USA, this industry employed approximately XX million employees in 2014.
The financial services industry is increasingly diversifying away from the banking channel. In 2011, Singapore experienced the biggest jump in total payments made by non-banks — an impressive XX% increase over 2009 levels. China had the second largest growth (XX%) followed by Saudi Arabia (XX%). Overall, the United States continues to dominate with nearly half of the total. Brazil, which saw a significant XX% increase in 2009 over 2008, came second.
