PEMFC will remain the dominant type of fuel cell till 2025 for primary applications in small to large UAVs, due to its ability to work under normal temperatures and without the need for additional cooling.

Early commercialization of fuel cells can be seen in small UAVs by 2017, as the power required is less, which results in light-weight fuel cells that can offer higher endurance capabilities than conventional Li-ion batteries.

Better technology to store hydrogen are seen in recent developments, such as the AEROPAK by Horizon Energy Systems. It uses light-weight titanium grade pressure regulators, which add more value to the fuel cells, making them a viable option by 2017.
