Egypt has one of the largest mobile telecom markets in Africa, and although it was among the first countries in the region to launch 3G mobile services the development of LTE services has suffered from delays. Nevertheless, Telecom Egypt in August 2016 received the country's first unified services licence, which allows it to offer LTE services. Commercial services are expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2017. Although the three network operators (Orange Egypt, Vodafone Egypt and Etisalat Misr) rejected the terms associated with the licences, Orange Egypt later secured a licence after negotiating revised terms. The licences enable providers to offer fixed-line as well as mobile voice and data services.

There is effective competition between the MNOs. Mobile penetration has increased steadily in recent years, reaching about 112% by late 2016.
This report outlines the major developments in the Egyptian mobile market, including updated statistics and profiles of the operators. The report also assesses market structure and regulatory measures related to spectrum awards and licensing, as well as emerging technologies and services including mobile TV and m-banking.

Key developments:

Central Bank of Egypt approves new regulations to encourage m-payment services; Telecom Egypt and Orange Egypt secure LTE licences; Orange Egypt contracts NEC Corporation to provide microwave radio system for LTE traffic; Vodafone sees subscriber recovery into 2016; Ericsson completes Evolved Packet Core (EPC) system for Orange Egypt; MVNO licences issued as part of new unified licensing regime; Etisalat Misr tries again for an IPO, hoping to raise $500 million; report updates include the regulator's market updates to September 2016, telcos' operating data to Q3 2016, recent market developments.
