Every item of EU food product labelling will need to meet new standards by December 2014, when Reg. 1169/2011 comes fully into force. This Regulation focuses on providing consumers with factual information which allows informed choices to be made about the composition and nutritional value of the product being purchased. It also prescribes the presentation style for mandatory information.

Among the major changes covered are:


A prescribed minimum font size for mandatory information
Mandatory nutritional Information, in a changed format
FoP Nutrition - voluntary, but if provided then to a prescribed format
Change from Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) to Reference Intake (RI) for nutrient intake
Ingredients – country of origin now mandatory for vegetable oil
Additive category names must be shown
Allergens must be highlighted in Ingredients listing
‘Contains’ boxes to be banned
Net Quantity - national exceptions removed
Origin Labelling - Commission reviewing, with results in 2015
