Analysis of Medium- and Heavy-duty Truck Turbochargers in North America, Europe, China, and India : By 2022, Fixed Geometry to Represent 2 out of 3 Installations

The global medium- and heavy-duty (MD-HD) truck market is evolving rapidly as a result of dynamic product changes as a result of emission standards, shifting the onus to research and development in the powertrain space. Turbocharging technologies will play an increasing role in powertrain strategies as power density and fuel efficiency challenges become the key consumer focus in major commercial vehicle markets. This study analyses the key trends and challenges influencing the MD- HD turbocharger market in the 4 top commercial vehicle markets of North America, Europe, China, and India. The study includes market forecasts through 2022, adoption rates, pricing, and a competitor analysis.

Key Findings

Penetration of various turbochargers in each region will be dependent on local customer and regulatory requirements.

MD-HD Truck Turbochargers Market: Key Takeaways, Selected Regions, 2014–2022

Key trends impacting turbocharger adoption in developed markets of North America and Europe are engine downsizing and strengthening regulations, whereas in emerging markets of China and India it is the need for more power, better fuel efficiency, and lower cost.

In North America, VGT will remain the standard installation in Class 8 and the majority of Class 7 trucks, with turbo-compounding set to grow exclusively in long-haul Class 8 trucks. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) prefer using a single turbocharger supplier over multiple ones.

In Europe. FGT will continue to strengthen its position, with penetration increasing from - % in 2014 to - % in 2022. OEMs in Europe prefer suppliers in the turbocharger development phase.

FGT will remain the dominant participant in China, although its penetration is expected to drop from - % in 2014 to - % in 2022, due to increasing uptake of VGT, which will become the fastest-growing technology, as well as increasing emission standards.

In India, FGT will continue to dominate, with a penetration rate of well over % due to high price sensitivity of customers, who prefer suppliers with local manufacturing capabilities. VGT penetration will only begin in the next to years, led by global OEMs, with penetration of around % by 2022.
