STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
This report will focus on the breadth of the wet-bench laboratory industry. This will include the breadth of the biological and chemical industries and will attempt to look at all segments. We will avoid all additional applications, such as laboratory automation and various forms of scientific analytic technologies. We will look at industrial, academic and government uses for liquid-handling technology. Also, there will be a
particular look at open-source liquid handling technologies and its impact on how the industry will evolve.

REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY
The fundamental technology of most wet-bench laboratories is the handling of liquids. Without this handling of liquids, much work cannot be done. As such, the rise of liquid-handling technology starting in the 1970s has played a key role for wet-bench laboratory applications throughout the biological and chemical sciences. From making technologies such as laboratory automation possible to simply making life simpler and
more productive on the bench, they have played a key role in laboratories throughout the world. This impact has a wide influence on what kind of work is done as well as what kind of consumables are used and the volume of reagents needed to operate. As such, trends in liquid-handling technology often drive trends in wet-bench laboratories in general.

Liquid handling is often used to save labor so that key technicians can be involved in other value-added tasks throughout the laboratory. Liquid handling is also needed in the modern wet-bench laboratory, as certain technologies from genome sequencing to flow chemistry would not be feasible without liquid handling. Liquid-handling technology is also proving key in reducing laboratory expenses. Particularly within clinical and academic laboratories, liquid handling is allowing work to be maintained while operating with fewer personnel resources. This importance will have large ramifications through the wet-bench laboratory industry.

SCOPE OF REPORT
This report will focus on liquid handling equipment for biological and chemical laboratory use. There will be a variety of different applications included in the scope of this report. This report will not focus on total laboratory automation solutions, as it will not cover the software and integrating hardware needed for these purposes. This report will also not cover the use of consumables, as most of the consumables used are
typically used in other laboratory applications.
