BMI View:

Tourism arrivals to the Philippines are growing rapidly as the country successfully raises awareness of its many attractions, including world class diving sites, luxury beach resorts and cosmopolitan cities. Original, overly ambitious, government targets were aiming for 10mn international arrivals in 2016, however these have been revised downwards to a more realistic figure of 6mn arrivals, a broadly achievable target in the midst of a highly competitive region. We expect to see further healthy growth in terms of tourism arrivals over our forecast period to 2019, providing a valuable boost to tourism related expenditure and making the Philippines a highly attractive potential investment destination for hotel and other tourism related developers.

Key Updates And Forecasts:

- Security concerns in parts of the Philippines will continue to deter potential visitors. Armed gunmen kidnapped four tourists from a resort on Samal Island in the south of the country in September 2015 and events such as these could impact upon tourism demand.
- International air connectivity will benefit from government expansion plans, including a USD332mn expansion of Clark International Airport, which will allow capacity of 12mn passengers by 2018, as well as expansion of smaller regional airports under a USD143mn investment programme. A new airport is also under construction on the island of Boracay which is due to open in 2017 and will have an 8mn annual passenger capacity.
