The access equipment market consists of a range of products designed to enable personnel to work safely and productively at height. The UK access equipment market was worth an estimated £254m in 2013, with growth forecast for 2014 reaching a market size of around £279m.

Powered access and non-powered access products compete for similar work and, within each separate sector, products also compete directly, for example, access towers, scaffolding and ladders. The rental sector is a key end use sector for access equipment, particularly in sub-sectors such as access towers and MEWPs. This is particularly relevant in recent years as hire companies replenished their stocks following disposal of equipment at the start of the economic and construction downturn.

The access equipment market is influenced by the relative health of key end-use sectors such as new build construction and repair, maintenance & improvement (RMI) activities in both the construction and industrial sectors as well as other sectors such as manufacturing and warehousing.

The access equipment market experienced steady growth from 2005-2007, followed by a significant decline 2008-2009 due to the economic and construction downturn. The market stabilised in 2010-2011 as challenging trading conditions prevailed, but an improvement in the powered access equipment sector in 2012 saw the market return to growth. This improvement reflects the resumption of fleet building, fleet refreshment programmes and re-equipping in the rental sector to replace fleet disposals during the construction downturn.

Whilst the powered access equipment sector returned to growth in 2012, the non-powered sector has only shown reasonable growth in 2014. The access equipment market performance has varied across the UK, with the South-East and locations such as Aberdeen experiencing more growth. Key non-domestic construction sectors providing opportunities recently included as infrastructure, offices and industrial.

Housebuilding completions are expected to increase by around 19% in 2014 and this will have helped stimulate demand for non-powered access equipment. Residential RMI has shown moderate levels of growth in recent years, with an increase in homeowners using contractors to undertake the work rather than do it themselves. This has benefited the market further as tradesmen tend to purchase better quality products.

Legislation impacts on the UK market for access equipment with for instance the ‘Work at Height Regulations 2005’ covering safe working at height and the more recent Tier 4 / Interim Stage IIIB Emissions Regulations, which are likely to add value to the market in the medium to long term.

Overall powered and specialist access is estimated to account for around 57% of the market in 2014, with non-powered access equipment accounting for the remaining share. Within the powered access sector, MEWPs account for the majority share, with an estimated market size of around £138m in 2014. In the non-powered sector, aluminium dominates the ladders materials mix, but GRP (glass reinforced plastic) has continued to gain share.

Overall future prospects for the construction industry, a key influencing factor on the access equipment market, appear more optimistic than in recent years as there appears to be an increased confidence in the recovery of the UK economy and more importantly that it will be sustained. Thus the market outlook to 2018 is positive as the UK economy and construction industry improves. In reality the market is more cyclical than indicated in the chart above, being influenced by erratic levels of growth in the relatively volatile MEWP sector.

Certain access equipment sectors will tend to perform better than others, with product, sector and regional demand varying to reflect different conditions. Following on from growth in 2013, improving trading conditions are expected to see the market grow by around 10% in 2014, primarily due to the strong performance in the powered access equipment sector. Further growth is forecast to 2018, although at lower annual growth rates, stimulated by the positive prospects within all sectors of the non-domestic construction sector, the residential sector and other sectors such as manufacturing. Key non-domestic end-use sectors expected to provide opportunities include infrastructure, commercial and industrial.

Improved safety performance and the reduction of risks & hazards of working at height represent the over-riding advantage of access equipment, which is likely to provide some additional added value opportunities from product development. Also the costs of meeting the latest Tier 4 / Interim Stage IIIB emissions standards is likely to add some value to the mobile platform sector. Product growth areas, as seen with the push arounds recently, will positively impact on the market. For instance there is a trend towards tracked spiders, booms and platforms. Any future health and safety legislation, in particular WAHR 2005, are likely to have positive implications for the market as well as future price rises adding value to the market across the review period.

The access equipment market is forecast to grow to an estimated market size of around £337m in 2018, with powered access equipment accounting an estimated £191m and non-powered equipment worth around £146m.
