Each sector reviewed separately, importance of domestic/commercial applications, product trends, key influences, major suppliers and distribution channels for each sector, future prospects. The market for door and window fittings is estimated at around £416m in 2012. This market declined after the financial crisis in 2008 and has shown little growth in the following years. The market is closely linked to the door and window fabrication and installation market and the glazing industry in general. In 2013, the UK market for doors and windows is experiencing a difficult period, arising from a combination of market maturity of the market and the ongoing effects of the financial crisis.

The supply and distribution structure remains very fragmented, complex and competitive. The sector has seen some consolidation, but there is still scope for further rationalisation as companies seek to broaden their range of products and/or sectors covered.

Locks and handles represent the two major product sectors, together accounting for approaching 60% of the fittings market. Door closers now account for an estimated 14%, having grown in recent years.

Polarisation is a striking feature of this market with both the high value, high specification and the low cost, basic product sectors having grown in recent years, whilst the mid-market segment has been heavily squeezed.

In 2013, there is a notable emphasis on suppliers carrying a wide/full range of fittings and offering good customer service and expertise, alongside significant commitment to new product development. While the general public does buy door and window fittings at the retail level, the bulk of this market is trade-based and often a commodity sector.

A reasonable share of the market is for retro-fit locks, handles or other hardware, making standard, traditional style fittings important in the product mix. There is also a sector of the market aimed at high specification developments (domestic and non-domestic), where styling and functionality are more strongly marketed and this sector is generally less price sensitive.

Whilst traditionally having a strong UK base in the Midlands, this market has now become global with a mix of UK and other European companies represented in the market, while Far East imports also play a significant part.

Low profit margins have become a key feature of the market in general, due to a combination of saturated markets, increasing competition, an increase in low cost imports and high raw material prices.

Distribution is fragmented with several key channels – fabricators and systems companies, DIY Multiples, Builders Merchants and Architectural Ironmongers all strong in the market and often serving specific key sectors.

The market is likely to see further development in the level of internet trading and online marketing opportunities – particularly for consumer and ‘jobbing builders’ where demand is low volume and low frequency.
