Health and safety concerns are supporting a shift in the market towards flame free jointing. Push-fit and press-fit fittings are increasingly popular, with considerable savings made on installation time.
Growing interest in rainwater harvesting systems, following heavy rainfall in recent years and greater awareness of environmental concerns and water usage.
With unpredictable rainfall patterns and climate change, there is a growth in demand for high capacity gutter systems.
Greater focus on sustainability throughout the production and distribution chain, particularly on recycling and the use of recycled materials in the plastic sector.
Other products experiencing growth include multi-layer press-fit pipes and connections, e.g. plastic and aluminium alloy.

Plumbing and heating contractors and influence on the specification process. The UK pipes and fittings market is estimated at £686 million at Manufacturers Selling Prices (MSP) in 2012. This represents an increase of 3% since 2011.

The plumbing pipe systems sector accounts for some 64% of the pipes and fittings market, as defined in this report. The rainwater, soil and waste products sector accounts for the remaining 36% of this industry.

Key factors influencing the market in recent years include historically low levels of construction in the commercial, public and housing sectors and rising raw material prices, particularly copper with some manufacturers forced to pass on rising costs to the end-users.

Value growth in the market has largely been achieved through raw material price rises in recent years, rather than an increase in demand from key end-use sectors.

Key end-use markets such as house building and non-domestic construction remain under pressure in line with the difficult economic environment.

The outlook for the UK pipes and fittings market in 2013 remains uncertain. Construction levels and RMI expenditure are expected to remain under pressure, with the market for pipes and fittings largely reliant on private sector construction in both the domestic and non-domestic sectors, as budget cuts continue to impact public sector expenditure.

Flexible plastic plumbing pipe systems are the dominant material used in hot and cold potable water installations. The market for copper pipe has remained relatively static in recent years, but is still used in the majority of heating installations and in refurbishment projects. There has also been steady growth in the demand for flame free fittings such as plastic push-fit and press-fit pipe fittings. Factors driving the growth of the plastic sector include technological developments and improved reliability. In addition, the use of plastic has become more established among plumbers.

Push-fit and press-fit fittings are also more popular, with considerable savings made on installation time. In addition, with increasing health and safety legislation, there has been a clear shift in the market towards flame free jointing.

PVC-U dominates the above ground rainwater guttering and soil and waste pipework sector. There is also a growing demand for seamless aluminium guttering and cast iron effect PVC-U guttering, which provides the effect of cast iron at a significantly cheaper price.

The pipes and fittings market is supplied by several large international companies who lead the overall market.

It is estimated that around 48% of pipes and fittings products are distributed via builder’s merchants, whilst 32% are sold by more specialist plumbing, roofing and drainage distributors. Around 10% are distributed via DIY multiples and other independent DIY/hardware stores. Others account for 10% and include internet and catalogue sales, plus direct sales from OEM business.
