Japan's status as a high income advanced economy makes it a lucrative market for consumer electronics device vendors, especially those with a premium device focus. The flipside is that device penetration is already high, and so growth potential is depleted with vendors reliant on replacement spending, which makes for weak fundamentals in the context of Japan's shrinking and ageing population. There was volatility in market value in 2015 and 2016, but from 2017 we expect device spending will return to a flat growth trajectory determined by fundamentals as the yen stabilises.

- Computer Hardware Sales: USD27.2bn in 2016 to USD26.7bn in 2020, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -0.5%. The hardware segment is forecast to be flat over the medium term, with PC market saturation and a demographic drag resulting in diminished volume growth potential.

- AV And Gaming Sales: USD10.9bn in 2016 to USD10.9bn in 2020, a CAGR of 0.0%. After a steep fall in value over 2011-2015 we forecast stabilization as TV set demand benefits from high value Ultra-HD upgrades, but with a drag from further digital camera demand cannibalization.

- Mobile Handset Sales: USD19.1bn in 2016 to USD19.6bn in 2020, a CAGR of 0.7%. Low-growth outlook for a saturated smartphone market, but potential upside if wearables gain mass market traction as devices to be used in combination with smartphones, rather than as substitutes.
