BMI View: Although small compared to regional markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Oman'spower sector is garnering significant public and private investment, and is expected to grow rapidly overour ten-year forecast period to 2024. Thermal power will continue to constitute the vast bulk of electricitygenerated in the country, fed by extensive oil and gas reserves. However, we are starting to see some foraysinto renewables, which could prove a viable long-term growth opportunity.Latest Updates And Structural TrendsAlthough domestic economic growth is slowing in the wake of the fall in global oil prices, demandcontinues to rise in Oman and electricity consumption is forecast to increase steadily. To keep pace withgrowing demand, the government is investing heavily in power infrastructure and a process of marketreform has yielded extensive opportunities through independent power producers (IPPs) and ongoingprivatisation. Oman has set a target of producing 10% of energy from renewable sources by 2020 and in linewith this target we are now seeing several large-scale solar projects entering the pipeline, with more likelyto follow. Overall, therefore, we expect total generation to increase from 36.35TWh in 2015 to 65.44TWhin 2024 - reflecting average annual growth of 6.9% throughout the forecast period.

- Three consortiums have reportedly submitted proposals to the Oman Power and Water ProcurementCompany develop two IPPs at Ibri and Sohar in Oman. The consortiums include France-based Engieand Japanese firms Marubeni Corporation and Mitsui & Co. The two IPPs will have a combinedgeneration capacity of 2,600MW and the winning bidder will be granted a licence to develop, own andoperate the two power plants and related facilities.

- Petroleum Development Oman reportedly plans to build one of the world's largest solar power plants -the 1,021MW plant in South Oman is being developed with US firm GlassPoint at an estimated cost ofUSD600mn and will be used to produce steam to aid the extraction of heavy oil, once construction iscompleted in 2017.
