BMI View: The short-term outlook for Switzerland's construction industry is subdued, with growth expectedto remain flat in 2015 and 2016. While we forecast a return to more positive territory from 2017 onwards, the maturity of the market and limited public spending means annual growth rates will remain in low singledigits over our ten-year forecast period. Much of this growth is based on investments in the transportsector, particularly rail, which is set to benefit from an influx of EU funding as the region developstransport routes such as the Rhine-Alpine Corridor. Meanwhile, there is little active investment in theutilities sector, although with vital hydropower plants ageing we may see an uptick in power infrastructureinvestment towards the end of the forecast period.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- Switzerland's Federal Office of Transport (FOT) and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have finalised abudget of CHF7.6bn (USD7.7bn) for rail infrastructure activities over 2017-2020, underpinning ourexpectation transport infrastructure will be the main source of construction industry growth throughoutthe forecast period.

- Swiss cement manufacturer Holcim and French firm Lafarge completed their merger in mid 2015 andlaunched LafargeHolcim, which has a market value of more than USD46bn. Following the merger,LafargeHolcim embarked on a programme of asset disposals (upon which the merger was conditional)including the sale of USD7bn of assets to Irish building materials firm CRH.
