Material Technologies Enabling NVH Reduction (TechVision) : Opportunity Evaluation Of Key Material Technologies For NVH Reduction

Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) is the field concerned with measurement and modification of the noise and vibration characteristics in products such as vehicles, aircrafts, space-crafts, consumer electronics, industrial equipment, and the like. The NVH industry is characterized by stiff competition, consolidation and market maturity across most applications. Timely delivery of a product, quality, ability to grow in mature market conditions are some of the challenges that suppliers of NVH products and technology developers currently face. Therefore, it is imperative for a supplier of NVH products to distinguish from the other competitors in the market through the offer of specialty products and technologies that specifically address unmet customer needs. This research service discusses the key material technologies available for NVH reduction. This includes a holistic analysis of the various component technologies in accordance with their technical capabilities, market needs, technology value chain, and industry requirements. In addition, environmental factors affecting adoption of the NVH materials across different industries will be analyzed. Furthermore, the research service provides an opportunity evaluation for NVH materials along with a technology adoption roadmap.

Key Findings

- Rubber/ elastomers have the right mix of mechanical properties for use in structural components along with metal substrate and composites. With a wide operating temperature range from (- to + ) degree Celsius, elastomers such as EPDM, neoprene and silicone rubber are being used as base components for developing composites with improved damping characteristics. Key features such as self-bonding to multiple substrates and light weight materials with exceptional mechanical strength are driving adoption of these materials in automotive and electronics industries.

-An eco-friendly material with exceptional ability to maintain dimensional stability on load, natural cork compounds also offer high vibration damping performance. Chemical companies such as BASF have succeeded in developing automotive vehicle interior liners which meet the density and mechanical properties requirements. Incorporating cork layer in polymer fiber composite or foam composites have shown improvements in NVH performance by not compromising on light weighting and stiffness property requirements.

-Flexible Polyurethane foam has proven to offer better sound absorption abilities owing to its open cell structure. Though not mechanically strong on its own, foam has a larger surface area and open air ways which enable higher efficiency of noise dampening. Ease of processing and design has concentrated research focus on using foam substrates for developing composites with better mechanical properties. Fillers such as carbon nanotubes and glass fibers are being tested as reinforcements to achieve dimensional stability for automotive interiors, exteriors, frame window seals in marine industry.

-Nonwoven fiber felts have found wide scale adoption in automotive interior applications such as roof headliners, carpet underlays, engine compartment liners mainly due to their flexibility and high frequency sound absorption abilities. Recent research focus has concentrated on improving the inter-fiber bonding using low melting point synthetic fibers for making heat-pressed felts. Multi-layered felts with intermediate layers of high strength poly-olefins are being explored for applications that have stringent environmental regulations such as construction and aerospace.

-Global Patent filing activity in the domain of new materials for NVH reduction has shown consistent growth at a rate of % year on year since 2013. Rubber/ elastomers and foam/ foam composites are the most widely used materials for new product development as they are prime choice of substrate for composite materials with enhanced NVH performance. USA, China, Japan and Germany are leading contributors to innovation in this industry.
