Chemical companies such as BASF have succeeded in developing automotive vehicle interior liners which meet the density and mechanical properties requirements. Incorporating cork layer in polymer fiber composite or foam composites have shown improvements in NVH performance by not compromising on light weighting and stiffness property requirements.

-Flexible Polyurethane foam has proven to offer better sound absorption abilities owing to its open cell structure. Though not mechanically strong on its own, foam has a larger surface area and open air ways which enable higher efficiency of noise dampening. Ease of processing and design has concentrated research focus on using foam substrates for developing composites with better mechanical properties. Fillers such as carbon nanotubes and glass fibers are being tested as reinforcements to achieve dimensional stability for automotive interiors, exteriors, frame window seals in marine industry.

-Nonwoven fiber felts have found wide scale adoption in automotive interior applications such as roof headliners, carpet underlays, engine compartment liners mainly due to their flexibility and high frequency sound absorption abilities. Recent research focus has concentrated on improving the inter-fiber bonding using low melting point synthetic fibers for making heat-pressed felts. Multi-layered felts with intermediate layers of high strength poly-olefins are being explored for applications that have stringent environmental regulations such as construction and aerospace.
