Table of Contents

This TforG Healthcare Market review report for Austria includes numerical and written analysis on the socioeconomic and macroeconomic context and outlook, the healthcare system, and the latest healthcare reforms. Moreover, an extensive chapter is dedicated to the markets for capital equipment, medical devices, disposables and pharmaceuticals.

The report helps businesses gain a unique insight into the socio-economic dynamics, and helps analyze how they affect healthcare systems and their evolution. It can serve as a valuable tool with actionable guidance for sales, marketing, R&D and business managers with industry related interests.

Four chapters cover the numerical and written analysis for the following topics: Economic Outlook (38 Key industry indicators), The Healthcare System (HC system structures), Reforms (restructuring, re-engineering or austerity efforts) and the Healthcare Market (Capital Equipment, Medical Devices, Disposables and Pharmaceuticals).

Socioeconomic Outlook:
-Austria’s nominal GDP in 2014 was 329 bln Euro. GDP has fallen from a growth rate of 3,1 percent in 2011 to 0,3 percent last year. This rate is forecasted to grow again steadily and reach two percent in 2017.
-The Austrian inflation was recorded at 1.5 percent in 2014, and is consistently a bit higher than in Germany, who it relies on heavily for exports and business.
-Austria has been listed as the tenth richest nation, based on per capita GDP, for the past seven years.
-Austria has strong industrial activity, foremostly machinery, metallurgical products and textiles. However, the most valuable industry is tourism. Industry consists mostly of small to medium-sized companies.

The Healthcare System:
-The Austrian healthcare system is based on the Bismarck Model and is largely financed by the national social security institution. Austrian social security operates through 22 different types of health insurance funds.
-Health insurance is compulsory in Austria for employees and employers. Currently 99 percent of the Austrian population has health insurance.
-There are nine Provinces in Austria, named Bundesländer in German. Each Bundesland has distinct funding, healthcare and insurance provisions.
-Healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP in 2014 was 9.81 percent, equivalent to 3,826 Euro per capita. In terms of the total healthcare expenditure 75.7 percent originated from public sources, and 24.3 percent came from private funds.
-Over 40 percent of expenditure is spent on hospital care. This is well above the average of the fifteen core European country’s average hospital expenditure of 36 percent.
- Austria has an emphasis on hospital care, which in part can explain the popularity of hospital-based primary care, and the avoidance of ingrained gatekeeping.
-The management of public hospitals in Austria is often outsourced or done in collaboration with private hospital management companies.

Reforms:
-The 2012 Health Reform
-The 2013 Health Reform
-New medical education project
-Ongoing projects of the Reformpool

Healthcare Markets:
-Austria is a popular location as an European distribution hub. Many multinational medtech companies have sales, distributive and or lean back offices quartered in Austria. It is also a strategic departing point for non-European enterprises.
-In 2014, around 435 medical technology enterprises in Austria employed 25,000 employees and generated an annual revenue of 7.1 bln Euro. Of the 435 medical technology companies, 136 are categorized as primary medical technology companies and account for 31 percent of the revenue; 299 companies are suppliers, service providers and sales forces accounting for 69 percent of the total revenue.
-Electromechanical medical devices (such as ECG and EGG) and clinical software are the two branches of medical technology that are most frequently produced in Austria. Combined they constitute 56.4 percent of the entire sector.
-The pharmaceutical sector imported approximately 6,4 m Euro, and exported 7,3 m Euro in 2013. The production value of pharmaceutical goods and products was around 2,77 m Euro.
-There are several large hospital networks in Austria, such as the Barmherzigen Brüder, Steiermärkische Krankenanstalten, Vinzenz Group and Salzburger Landesklinken. Typically these networks will have a purchasing committee responsible to obtain the bulk needs of the hospital demands within their network, following strategic and operative guidelines to maximize quality and cost-containment.
-Whether a product is reimbursed or not by the social insurance fund is a key factor in the decision-making process.
- Austria has a strong network in the biotech, pharma and medtech device industry, lending it credibility, accountability, expertise, and stability for further national and international transactions, collaborations, investments, innovation and development.
