Mobile penetration in the UAE is among the highest in the world, largely due to the country's affluence as well as to a significantly sized and fluid population of expatriate workers. Often, consumers own more than one SIM card to take advantage of promotional offers.

The mobile market is served by a duopoly comprised of incumbent Etisalat and, since 2007, competing operator du. Both operators are majority owned by the government. Etisalat is the mobile market leader, with about 54% of the country's mobile subscribers.

Etisalat and du have both deployed sophisticated HSPA+ and LTE networks that cover more than 88% of the population, underpinning growth opportunities centred on mobile broadband, content and applications. Smart phones are becoming increasingly popular, accounting for close to two thirds of the country's mobile handsets. The growing availability of low cost smart phones will drive penetration going forward. Both Etisalat and du are demonstrating keen interest in developing 5G technology.

This BuddeComm report provides valuable insights on the UAE mobile market, including mobile broadband, and includes key trends and statistics.

Key developments:

In early 2016 Du signed an agreement with myFC to offer its JAQ fuel cell charger in the UAE; In late 2015 Thuraya and Etisalat formed a partnership to offer mobile satellite services to Etisalat customers; In late 2015 Du expanded an existing partnership with the Vodafone Group to include Vodafone's M2M platform which du can market to UAE businesses.
