The China market for traffic sign recognition systems was worth US$ 68 million in 2015, and is expected to reach US$ 148 million by 2020, at CAGR of XX%. Traffic sign recognition is an uphill task when aimed at detecting and recognizing the signs in images captured from critical and harsh environments. Researchers have developed vision-based techniques for traffic monitoring, traffic-related parameter estimation, driver monitoring, and intelligent vehicles to develop the mechanism of Traffic sign recognition (TSR)systems. Road and traffic sign recognition is one of the critical segment in the ITS (Intelligent Transportation System). The road signs and traffic signals define a visual language that is interpreted by the drivers. The signs and signals represent the current traffic situation on the road, show the danger and difficulties around the drivers, and provide warnings to the driver. Traffic sign recognition techniques using computer vision technologies to detect traffic, makes the task automated and are carried out more frequently, resulting in greater road safety and convenience.

Complex background, weather, shadow, and other lighting-related problems may make it difficult to detect and recognize signs in the rural as well as the urban areas in the country. Two major problems exist in the whole detection process, which poses challenge in the adoption of TSR systems. Road signs are frequently occluded partially by other vehicles. Many objects are present in traffic scenes, which make the sign detection hard (pedestrians, other vehicles, buildings and billboards may confuse the detection system by patterns similar to that of road signs). However, the developments made in the pattern detection and recognition would significantly help to increase the credibility of these systems, leading to greater adoption of these systems. Irrespective of the difficulties in road sign recognition, the improvement in state-of-the-art technologies for these mechanisms generate the potential trend in the development of road sign recognition in the country.

Road and traffic signs requires to be designed to make it distinguishable from the natural and conventional backgrounds. Traffic signs are characterized by many features, which make them recognizable with respect to the environment. Road signs are designed, manufactured and installed according to tight regulations. While most OEMs are integrating sensors and cameras for traffic sign detection and recognition in new cars, other sensors based companies are offering add-on sensors, which can be used in cars without pre-installed pedestrian detection systems. Among application, Colour-based detection systems would have the highest share in the traffic sign recognition control systems.
