BMI View:Sweden's tourism market is relatively small compared to more established Western Europedestinations, such as France, Spain and Italy. The country is heavily dependent upon regional travel fromneighbouring Nordic states, many of which are being impacted by the fall in global oil prices and aslowdown in economic growth leading to a weak short-term growth forecast. The medium-term outlook isstronger, with rising visitor numbers and a healthy investment environment supporting growth in the hotelsector, particularly outside of the capital in up-and-coming tourism destinations such as Malmo and Lund.

- The ongoing migrant and refugee crisis has the potential to impact upon Sweden's tourism market. Thecountry has introduced stricter border crossing controls, including at the Oresund Bridge from the 4January 2016 - a major crossing point between Sweden and key market Denmark - which could causeextensive delays and deter some potential visitors.

- The short-term outlook for Sweden's inbound tourism market is subdued, with total arrivals expected tofall over the year as regional travel weakens. Over the remainder of the forecast period we expect to see areturn to growth and by 2020 total arrivals are expected to reach just over 5mn, up from 4.8mn in 2016.
