The market size of agricultural micro-irrigation machinery is expected to reach around USD 4,909.49 million by 2020. The expected CAGR is around 17.2 % over 2015-2020. In the present agricultural scenario, water scarcity is a major challenge and a key driver for the use of micro irrigation machinery systems. In a majority of the countries, water scarcity leads to deterioration in the food production both in terms of quality and quantity. Fragmented lands need a controlled amount of water and irrigation systems have proved useful here. Irrigated land is twice as productive as rain-fed land.

Water is the basic agricultural input required in any type of geography. Prior to the advent of mechanization, farmers depended on natural sources for irrigation. However, mechanization of agriculture has moved past tractors to every aspect of the crop production cycle.

Irrigation mechanization is one of the newest advances in agriculture. The latest innovations in irrigation mechanization are sprinkler and drip irrigation. Such mechanization not only increases productivity and yield per hectare but also reduces the water consumption per farm.

However, the majority of the farmers have small land holdings and thus cannot afford sophisticated irrigation machinery. In some of the tropical countries where most of the agricultural lands are rain fed, irrigations systems are useful for a few seasons but not so much afterward. Customization of irrigation systems according to the geography is also quite challenging. People belonging to rural areas with lower than average incomes are skeptical of using the advanced machinery and without local networks, promotions have failed in these areas.
