Use of Stem Cell Therapy to Mitigate Ischemic Stroke Recovery

As indicated by the World Health Organization, stroke is the second-leading cause of death for people over the age of and is the fifth-leading cause of death for those between the ages of and . The incidence of stroke is expected to increase by % over the next years. This is due, in part, to an aging global population. For example, in Japan, % of people are currently aged or over. In the United States, % of the population was aged or older in 2009, which is expected to rise to % by 2030. Globally, by 2030, more people will be over the age of 60 than under the age of .

Already, there are more adults older than 60 than there are children under the age of . Ischemic stroke accounts for % of all strokes. It is caused by an obstruction in blood vessels that supply blood to the brain. The extent of the damage caused by ischemic stroke depends on the part of the brain that is affected and the length of time the blockage is in place. Damage may range in severity from the minor impairment of muscle movement to the loss of speech, thought processes, memory, and/or complete paralysis.

Over % of ischemic stroke victims have permanent symptoms and only % fully recover. Therefore, treatment for ischemic stroke could greatly increase survival rates and quality of life for the global aging population. However, it is difficult to estimate the financial impact of ischemic stroke as it is a multifaceted disease. It requires both immediate (acute) medical care and long-term (chronic) care of the patients it affects. In countries with aging populations and socialized medicine, ischemic stroke could be a significant socio-economic burden.
